I have to say one of the best perks of attending college is the four month break in between Winter and Fall semesters (unless one takes summer classes; in which case, never mind). But for as long as four months can seem at the onset, it sure seems to fly.
It’s been four months since I have written for this paper. Four months spent doing some things that I could never have conjured in my wildest dreams, and some things that are simply too mundane to mention. I arguably experienced the best summer of my life this past year, and I sincerely hope the same is true for all of you.
What did I spend my summer doing, you ask?
I lived in Rome for six weeks in the Trastevere neighborhood. From Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm, I got to pick axe, shovel, trowel, and wheel barrow my way through a Republican era town in the hills of the Italian countryside. Living in one of the world’s oldest urban areas and waking up every day to do something I love – it was a dream come true.
I hope that all of you someday get the opportunity to live like that. I learned more than I ever have within such a archaeology, about ceramics, about bones, and mostly about myself. If you are further interested (I won’t bore you with any more extraneous details), check out my blogs from the summer on the Michigan Journal website.
When I began this column last year, I was told that I could write about anything. I really took that to heart; sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. I plan on continuing to do the same for this year, hopefully with the continual improvement all writers strive for. This is my last full year here, and I intend on making the most of it.
Let’s be honest: as long as global issues continue becoming problematic; as long as current events keep occurring; as long as my occasionally sassy mouth keeps on running, I will have an opinion. And I will most likely be recording it here.
Happy Fall to All, and to All a Good Semester!
(And even if it’s not a good semester…it’s only three months).
